Smappee Energy Monitoring System

Smappee analyses the use of solar energy, gas, water and electricity down to circuit and appliance level. Users get energy insights and discover their energy consumption, production, energy guzzlers, standby power, etc. in real-time, anytime and anywhere using the Smappee App and Dashboard.

The Smappee Switch, Scenes and partnerships with third-party IoT solutions empower users to steer energy automatically to appliances in the order of their preference, store it in the battery or switch appliances on or off in the most energy-efficient way, optimising auto-consumption and enabling self-sufficiency.

Smappee aims to change its users’ energy habits by reducing their energy consumption without compromising on comfort. This ensures that both the user and the environment benefit from Smappee’s energy efficiency solutions.

An energy monitoring system will allow you to cut ever-rising energy costs and facilitate auto-consumption, using the renewable energy produced to its fullest. To do that, you need real-time, actionable energy insights and the ability to automate the energy flows on your premises. Appliances need to switch on or off automatically when production peaks or is at a low and surplus energy needs to be stored for later. Smappee allows just that, paving the way for a future in which buildings are decentralized energy hubs without having to compromise on comfort.

Smappee is the only energy monitoring system that gives you insights at a glance into electricity, solar production, gas and water. Smappee Infinity also offers the most comprehensive submetering facilities in the market with three submetering options: using current clamps, the smart plug Smappee Switch or Smappee’s patented NILM (Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring). Thanks to its submetering capabilities, real-time energy data and ability to set scenes, Smappee can also take on the role of an Energy Traffic Controller. In other words, Smappee is capable of automatically steering energy to appliances in the order of your preference, storing it in the battery or switching appliances on or off in the most energy-efficient way. As such, Smappee Infinity optimises auto-consumption and enables self-sufficiency.

Smart meters only visualise the total energy consumption from the installation’s grid and energy supplied to the grid on a regular basis. The smart meter does not provide any information about:

  • real-time energy use and the impact of your actions on that
  • which circuits or appliances make up the total consumption value
  • exactly how much energy a circuit or appliances uses and when
  • your total solar production and how much of it you consume yourself
  • gas and water consumption data

Smappee Infinity provides submetering and load disaggregation capabilities to visualise real-time consumption up to circuit and appliance level, the total solar production and the status of battery storage. This gives insights in the energy flows within your building. Smappee also takes on the role of an Energy Traffic Controller. This means that Smappee is capable of automatically steering energy to appliances in the order of your preference, storing it in the battery or switching appliances on or off in the most energy-efficient way. As such, Smappee Infinity optimises auto-consumption and enables self-sufficiency.

The Smappee Infinity has three essential components:

  1. Smappee CT Hubs: are the main components of the monitoring system. You can connect up to 4 CTs or Rogowski coils to the CT Hub to measure different currents, ranging from 50A to 1000A. This allows for accurate submetering of an appliance or group of appliances. Use a daisy chain of up to 7 CT Hubs to measure different installations over a distance of up to 100 meters.
  2. Smappee Power Box: this is the heart of the monitoring system as it provides power to all components. It measures the line voltage of the different connected phases and transfers the data via the Smappee Bus.
  3. Smappee Genius: is the gateway between the monitoring system and the Smappee Cloud, ensuring secure data storage from different components. It also interacts with third-party components, Smappee Gas & Water and Smappee Switch. A typical Smappee Infinity set-up consists of 1 Power Box, 1 Genius, several CT Hubs and several CTs. 


Thanks to the Energy Traffic Control functionalities, Smappee Infinity is capable of automatically steering energy to appliances in the order of your preference, storing it in the battery or switching appliances on or off in the most energy-efficient way. As such, Smappee Infinity optimises auto-consumption and enables self-sufficiency. 

There are multiple ways to detect your appliances with Smappee:

  • Connecting current transformers (CT) in your fuse box (provides real-time 1 second information)
  • Connecting a Smappee Switch between the power outlet and the appliance for wireless submetering of mono-phase appliances (provides data at 5-minute intervals)
  • Submetering with Smappee’s patented NILM (Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring). Smappee NILM provides insight into appliance consumption (70% of consumption and events in the appliances detected) and monthly consumption per identified appliance. On average, 4 to 5 main household appliances are identified after a few weeks. This function is disabled by default and for residential use only.

Installation is done in two parts: physical installation in the fuse box and configuration using the step-by-step installation wizard in the Smappee App or Dashboard. The compact plug-and-play system is robust and reliable, with hubs connecting current clamps (CTs). Thanks to its modularity, additional single- or three-phased energy metering can be installed in five to ten minutes. Maintenance requires little effort, which keeps the total cost of ownership low.

Get a Smappee Switch for operating appliances remotely and for wireless submetering of mono-phase appliances.

Smappee Switch works with the most popular plugs (B, E, F, G, I, J, L, M) and can switch to capacities of up to 16A (country-specific). Smappee Switch works on the 433 MHz or 915 MHz (US) frequency and must therefore be located within a maximum range of 10 to 20 metres of your Smappee monitor. Dynamic switching (e.g. reducing water heater from 16A to 8A at peak times) is only possible for smart appliances and only when combined with the Energy Traffic Controller, which is supplied with Smappee Infinity. Switch’s switching functionality is thus limited to an on/off function.

You want to use multiple Smappee Switches? You can configure up to 20 Smappee Switches using one Smappee energy monitor. You can also use your Smappee Switches in your cellar, attic or other rooms in your house where nromally you cannot receive any communication signal. A Switch can pass on the signal to another Switch so you can bridge longer distances and overcome obstacles such as concrete. You can link up to 3 Switch stations and the maximum range between each of these stations is 10 to 20 metres.

!Important! Smappee Switch only works with a Smappee energy monitor.

The Smappee Gas & Water takes the readings from your gas and water meters, using an optical or magnetic sensor, and sends this data to the Smappee App and Smappee Dashboard. Unfortunately, the gas and water monitor does not work with digital meters, gas meters with magnetic output or meters with red revolving dials.

The Smappee Gas & Water needs to be installed within 10 to 20 metres of your Smappee energy monitor. It is also important to have a smartphone or tablet running at least Bluetooth 4.0 LE.

You can use the Smappee Gas & Water in your apartment. If the meter is installed in the basement, you will need Bluetooth for data transfer to your smartphone or tablet. In this case, you will need to go regularly to your gas and water monitor (within 7 metres), open the Smappee App and wait for 20 seconds. The Smappee Gas & Water and the App will automatically find each other and exchange data. We suggest you do this once a month.

Flipr - pool monitoring

Flipr measures the level of disinfectant (chlorine or bromine), PH level, water conductivity and water temperature. Thanks to our artificial intelligence and predictive algorithms, Flipr is able to detect irregularities in alkalinity (TAC), or in the hardness (TH) of water. Flipr does not just give you a data: every measure is accompanied by clear and precise information about how to keep your water healthy. Finally, the application offers a weather service, as well as many tips to maintain and enjoy your pool.

Flipr is compatible with chlorine, bromine and salt (electrolysis) pools.

Regarding chlorine treatments, we note that Flipr works both with stabilized and non-stabilized chlorine. However, stabilized chlorine has the main disadvantage of spreading stabilizer in the pool. A too higher level of stabilizer can distort the results of the chlorine level . If this were the case, Flipr would use other parameters and calculations to deduce chlorine. You will also be asked to perform some actions to regulate the stabilizer level.

We also recall that the use of stabilizer, and its high concentration in the basin, leads in the long term to a great instability of the water (high risk of turbid and green waters).

No subscription will be required. The price includes Flipr, the object to place in the water, and its use. Simply place Flipr in your pool to start working and sending data. The application is completely free, and downloadable on the AppStore Apple and Google Play Store.

Flipr can be used with pool shutters/covers. In this case, it is necessary to fix Flipr to the wall of the basin.

We offer a fixing system specially designed to operate with roller shutters. This exclusive system makes it possible to rotate Flipr and to pass it under the flap. So you do not need to remove Flipr, and your shutter will not be stopped when you’ll close it. The fixing system is available on our website.

Note: once the shutter is closed, Flipr will be underwater. In this case, Flipr may no longer emit a Sigfox signal. It will reconnect and return data when the pane is opened again.

The maintenance of Flipr is very easy:

  • Off season: we advise you to leave Flipr of the water (example: from October to March). All you have to do is place it in wintering mode. In this case, the application will guide you step by step (very simple).
  • At the beginning of the season: when you place Flipr in water, a calibration of the sensors will have to be carried out. This operation, very easy, will be explained to you by the application. Just follow the steps.
  • In season: Nothing to do!
  • Every two or three years: The Flipr battery has a lifetime of 3 years. It is also advisable to change the sensors after 2 years. We offer various services all included to ensure this maintenance.

Flipr has 2 components with a limited lifetime.

  1. The battery: the battery has a lifetime of 3 seasons (one season = 7 months of use). It is not rechargeable.
  2. The sensors : all our sensors have a lifetime of 2 seasons.

When the batteries or probes are depleted, we offer an all-including replacement service. You don’t make anything: we take Flipr from your home(1), make the replacement, and send it back. The service includes the change of components, labour and transport(1). This service guarantees the water-tightness of your Flipr.

Flipr is a high-tech device in a humid environment with electronic components. In order to ensure a perfect operation over time, Flipr must be perfectly waterproof (IP68 standard). Therefore, any work on Flipr must be carried out by highly qualified personnel. It can be our own teams (1), or an authorized dealer for the repair of products.

Sigfox is a telecommunications network, similar to the one used by your mobile phone.

The particularity of this network is that it is adapted to connected objects.

Sigfox is the network used by Flipr Start to send its data to your Smartphone. You can therefore access your pool data from anywhere in the world, as long as your pool is covered by the network.

In some cases, very rare, It is possible that Flipr can not connect to its network due to the configuration of your pool. In this case, you have 2 possibilities:

  • You can use bluetooth: you just need to be near the Flipr to recover the data.
  • You can assert your right of withdrawal: You have 14 days from the day you have receiving your product. You’ll have to send back the product, and we will  reimburse you (excluding return costs)

Yes, you can place Flipr in the Skimmer, if it is big enough. Nevertheless, we advise against it: the skimmer is often the place where one places its pebbles of chlorine. Placing Flipr near the pebbles could distort the results of Chlorine analysis. Residues and wastes in the skimmer could also distort some results.

It all depends on the data service you will be using.

  • If you use Sigfox (what we recommend): you can be on the other side of the world and manage to recover the data from your pool.
  • If you use Bluetooth: you must be within a radius of 8m around your Flipr.
